Mentor is the largest city in Lake County at about 47,000 people, and it grew the way postwar suburbs grew: subdivisions platted and planted in waves, with street trees and yard trees going in at more or less the same time. Fifty and sixty years on, those trees are all hitting the same stage of life at once. It’s why a street can go years with nothing happening and then need four removals in one season.
The city takes its trees seriously. Mentor has been a Tree City USA for more than three decades, runs a Tree Commission that administers a Master Street Tree Plan, and gives residents free street trees. Street trees are the city’s, not yours, so the first thing to establish on any Mentor job is whether the tree in question is in the tree lawn or in your yard.
What we mostly see on Mentor lots: silver maples planted too close to the house that are now dropping limbs, ash that emerald ash borer killed years ago and nobody has taken down yet, and Norway maples strangling themselves on girdling roots. The dead ash is the one worth acting on — it goes brittle and unclimbable faster than people expect, and it becomes a removal that costs more the longer it stands.
Wind off the lake is the other factor. Mentor is close enough to the shoreline — the marsh and Headlands are right there — that a hard northerly hits harder here than it does inland, and that’s when the emergency calls come. We run up from Chardon for tree service in Painesville most weeks.

More urgent than it looks. Ash killed by emerald ash borer doesn’t stay sound — the wood goes brittle within a few years, the bark sheds, and limbs start coming off with no warning and no wind. It also gets more expensive: once a climber can’t safely work the tree, it needs a lift or a crane. A dead ash near a house or a driveway is worth doing this year rather than next.

What actually moves a price is the tree itself — size, what’s underneath it, how much equipment has to reach it, and whether debris is chipped on site or hauled.
