Eight to twenty inches below grade, and we take the surface roots with it. How deep we go depends on what’s going in afterward — turf needs less than a planting bed, and a spot that’s about to be paved or built on needs more. Tell us the plan for the space and we’ll grind to suit it.
You end up with a pile of grindings: chewed-up wood mixed with soil, sitting where the stump was. There’s more of it than people expect, because ground wood takes up more room than solid wood did. We can rake it back into the void and crown it slightly so it settles level, or haul it off and leave you a clean hole for topsoil. Say which you want and we’ll price it that way.
Grass, yes — backfill with topsoil once the grindings settle and seed it like any other bare patch. A new tree in the exact same spot is harder: decomposing wood chips tie up the nitrogen a young tree needs. For that, have us haul the grindings out and replace them with real soil rather than planting into the leftovers.

In our experience, no. Chemical removers work slowly at best and often not at all on a large hardwood stump, and burning a stump out is both slow and a genuine fire risk with roots that run under lawn and mulch. Grinding is the only method that reliably takes the stump and its roots out below grade in a single visit and leaves the ground usable the same day.
Yes. Plenty of our grinding work is on stumps that have been sitting for years, and old, weathered stumps grind fine. If the stump was cut high, mention it — a tall stump takes longer than one that was cut flush. If the tree is still standing, we can handle the removal and the stump in the same trip.
