For a tree standing on your own property, generally no. The one to watch is the tree lawn — the strip between the sidewalk and the street. Those are city trees, Chardon has a Shade Tree Commission that oversees them, and contractors working in the city right-of-way have to be bonded with a certificate of insurance naming the city. Tell us where the tree actually stands when you call and we’ll sort out which side of that line you’re on before anything gets cut.

What matters is where the failures are happening: deadwood out at the tips is normal aging, but splits at the main unions, fungal conks at the base, or a hollow you can put your arm into are a different conversation.
