Chagrin Falls has more tree cover than nearly anywhere in Cuyahoga County — around 55% canopy against a county average closer to 35% — and it has held onto it on purpose. The village is a Tree City USA, it runs a Shade Tree Committee, and the Street Department trims village trees on a schedule each spring and fall.
That matters when you hire someone. Village code doesn’t allow a contractor to take out a tree in the tree lawn or the right-of-way without the village’s consent, so the first question on any Chagrin Falls job is whose tree it actually is. If it’s yours, we can schedule it. If it’s the village’s, we’ll tell you that rather than cut it and apologize afterward.
The work itself is close-quarters. Village lots are narrow, the houses are old and close together, and there’s usually a slate roof, a stone wall, or a neighbor’s porch inside the drop zone. Nothing here gets felled. Removals are dismantled and lowered piece by piece, and where the tree is over the roof the crane picks the sections out from the street.
Most of what we do in the village is pruning rather than removal — mature trees over old houses, kept in shape and kept off the roof. When something does come out, stump grinding matters more in a small yard than it does on five acres. For a tree in your own yard, no. For a tree in the tree lawn or anywhere in the right-of-way, yes — village code requires the village’s consent before it comes out, and that isn’t something a contractor can waive on your behalf. Chagrin Falls also runs a Shade Tree Committee and trims village trees itself. When you call, tell us roughly where the tree stands relative to the sidewalk and we’ll tell you which conversation you’re having.
In pieces, on ropes. A climber sets a rigging point above the cut, each section gets roped before it’s severed, and it’s lowered rather than dropped. Where the tree is over the roof or there’s genuinely nowhere to swing a piece, we bring the crane and lift sections out to the street. It’s slower than felling and it’s the only method that works here.
That’s the job. We don’t top trees — cutting a mature crown back to stubs produces weak, crowded regrowth and a tree that fails worse later. Proper pruning takes out deadwood, crossing limbs, and the weight that’s actually over the house, and leaves something that still looks like a tree.
